Why Traditional Approaches Aren’t Working

Most approaches focus on what we can see.

The behavior. The outburst. The lack of focus. The resistance.

So we try to fix it there.

More reminders.

More consequences.

More strategies.

More “try harder.”

But behavior is the last thing to show up—not the first place to start.

Behavior Is the Signal—Not the Problem

When a child is melting down, refusing, shutting down, or bouncing off the walls…

it’s easy to label it as defiance, lack of motivation, or poor listening.

But underneath that behavior is something deeper:

A nervous system that doesn’t feel safe.

A body that is overwhelmed, overstimulated, or disconnected.

A system that has shifted into survival mode—not learning mode.

You Can’t Regulate Behavior Without Regulating the Body

When the nervous system is activated:

  • The thinking brain goes offline

  • The body prepares for fight, flight, or freeze

  • Focus, flexibility, and problem-solving decrease

  • Big emotions take over

No amount of talking, correcting, or consequences can override this state.

Because this isn’t a behavior issue.

It’s a biological state.

This Is Why Traditional Strategies Fall Short

Traditional approaches often:

  • Ask children to use skills they don’t yet have access to

  • Expect calm behavior from a dysregulated body

  • Focus on compliance instead of connection

  • Miss the root cause entirely

And when those strategies don’t work…

children feel frustrated, and adults feel defeated.

Regulation Starts in the Nervous System

Real, lasting change doesn’t begin with behavior.

It begins in the body.

When a child’s nervous system feels safe:

  • Breathing becomes more natural

  • Muscles soften instead of brace

  • The brain becomes available for learning

  • Emotions become more manageable

  • Behavior begins to shift—naturally

This Is the Shift

Instead of asking:

“How do I change this behavior?”

We begin to ask:

“What does this child’s nervous system need right now?”

Because when the body becomes more regulated…

everything else starts to fall into place.

Move Into Calm Approach

At Move Into Calm, we don’t try to control behavior.

We support the nervous system—through:

âś” movement

âś” breath

âś” connection

Because when the body feels safe, behavior doesn’t have to be forced—it changes.

đź’› Tools for Parents

“Tami didn’t just help my son—she gave us tools as parents. Now we have a regulation toolbox at home that will support him for a lifetime.”

Our 8-year-old son has come from an atrocious and traumatic
history until he was 3 when God brought him to us. It's been a
long, hard road to healing, with many people coming alongside us

to help on this journey.

After starting meds for ADHD, completing two long courses of
CBT, as well as incorporating many holistic approaches at home,
our son was still struggling with some things, and we were
beginning to feel like we just had to accept the growth in our son

had reached its max.

That's when we got Tami's information from a family friend.
"Trauma-informed movement therapy" was a new concept to us,

but it was worth a shot.

Honestly, after the first 3.5 weeks, we didn't think much would
change. Then suddenly, after our 4th session, something in our son

clicked.

His sensory issues improved. Clothes he refused to wear because of

discomfort weren't bothering him anymore.

Sleep onset improved.

Focus and attention improved (it was almost like his ADHD meds

were increased).

His emotional meltdowns were less often and less severe.
His clumsiness, poor balance and frequent falls improved.
Tami takes the time to explain what's going on and what we can

keep doing at home to keep our son on track.

It's been so exciting and rewarding to see the growth in our son
(and us as parents). I highly recommend allowing Tami to be a part

of your healing journey.
